Even if we only have 1000 roots, this enables 1m simple compounds, of which we'd need perhaps 50k to cover relatively simple meanings, and 1b three-element compounds, which would be more than enough to cover everything in any dictionary. Even if we only have 1000 roots, this enables 1m simple compounds, of which we'd need perhaps 50k to cover relatively simple meanings, and 1b three-element compounds, which would be more than enough to cover everything in any dictionary. (And realistically, many ideas would be better expressed through longer compounds.) So surely 1000 is more than enough.
